Rapé: ceremonial blends from the Amazon
Rapé (also written hapé, and sometimes called sacred blow) is a traditional preparation of Amazonian peoples in Peru and Brazil. It is a finely ground powder that is blown into the nose through a pipe: a kuripe for self-application, or a tepi when another person applies it. The practice has been part of ceremony, meditation and breathwork for generations.
On this page you can buy rapé online in a range of blends. Each blend has its own aroma, character and strength, and every product page lists the ingredients we know of, so you can choose with clear information.
What is rapé made of?
Traditional rapé is not a single plant. A blend usually contains finely ground Mapacho (Nicotiana rustica), a tobacco plant, mixed with the ash of trees or other plants and, in some blends, further herbs. Because the ashes and plants differ from blend to blend, no two blends smell or feel the same. The main components are:
- Mapacho (Nicotiana rustica), the base of the blend
- Ashes of trees and plants, such as Tsunu, Emburana, Paricá or Murici
- Further plants and herbs that give each blend its aroma
Which plants are in each blend?
Many rapé recipes are passed down within families and communities, so the full list of plants and their proportions is not always published. We therefore name the ingredients that are known for each product and mark any further plants as not named.
How rapé is used
Rapé is applied through the nostrils with a kuripe or a tepi. Traditional use puts intention, calm and respect first, and the practice is usually done in a quiet setting. Rapé is commonly used for:
- Grounding and centring
- Meditation and breathwork
- Spiritual ceremonies and rituals
- Quiet personal reflection
What to expect
Many people describe a short, intense sensation, often a burning feeling in the nose, followed by a quiet, focused state. Experience differs from person to person, and we make no promise about any effect.
How to choose a rapé blend
Start with the product page. It names the main ingredients, the strength of the blend and its aroma. Blends such as Yawanawa Tsunu, Huni Kuin or Katukina Eucalipto carry the names of the traditions that inspired them, and the Discovery Bundles let you compare five blends in 5 g portions.
A kuripe is the usual choice for personal use and a tepi for sharing rapé with another person. Both are available in the tepi and kuripe category.
Buying rapé online with care
When you buy rapé online, look for clear information: ingredients, strength, weight and traditional context. Rapé is a traditional ceremonial product, not a recreational one, and it is sold to adults only (18+).
Use rapé consciously and in moderation, with respect for the traditions it comes from. It is not a shortcut to anything. It is a tool for ceremony and inner work, and the intention you bring matters more than the powder itself.
